Why your cat shadows you
PetMD lists several benign reasons a cat trails its owner:
- Hunger or learned food-seeking — following toward the kitchen or bowl
- Attention or play — understimulated cats seek engagement
- Curiosity — investigating the rooms and doors you open
- Social closeness and security — cats form family bonds and feel safest together
- Stress or anxiety — seeking reassurance (oxytocin release)
- Illness — a prey species clings when vulnerable
They may also follow you into the bathroom to "protect" you during a vulnerable moment.
When following is a flag
Normal following is relaxed and settles when you leave. PetMD says to worry when it is new or intensifying, shows distress when alone, or pairs with changes in appetite, water intake, litter habits, or activity. Hyperthyroidism, hypertension, kidney disease, arthritis, and cognitive decline can all present as increased following — so rule out medical causes first.
What to do
For the common, benign versions:
- Hunger: use a timed or automatic feeder and puzzle toys to break the follow-to-feed loop.
- Attention: increase interactive wand play and environmental enrichment.
- Space: keep off-limit doors closed, or install cat gates.
- Stress: calming supplements or pheromone diffusers, plus a vet consult if needed.
Myth vs reality
Myth: a cat that follows you everywhere has separation anxiety. Reality: following alone does not diagnose separation anxiety — true feline separation anxiety is considered uncommon. Most following is ordinary attachment, curiosity, or learned food-seeking, not a disorder.
Frequently asked questions
Does my cat have separation anxiety?
Following by itself is not the diagnosis. True feline separation anxiety is considered uncommon, and most shadowing is attachment, curiosity, or learned food-seeking. Distress when alone, with destruction or elimination, would be the stronger signal — and a vet check should come first.
Why does my cat follow me to the bathroom?
Partly curiosity about a closed door, and partly a "protective" instinct — a prey animal stays near its trusted person during a vulnerable moment. It is normal and usually a sign of closeness.
Why does my cat follow me but not my partner?
Cats distribute attention based on who feeds, plays, and bonds with them. A cat that shadows one person simply has a stronger association with that person — often the one who provides the resources and play.
When is following actually a problem?
When it is new or intensifying, comes with distress when alone, or pairs with appetite, water, litter, or activity changes. Those patterns point to a medical or anxiety issue that a vet should evaluate.
