Why cats meow at night
Meowing is mainly a cat-to-human signal. PetMD and the ASPCA list the usual reasons:
- Attention-seeking — meowing reliably gets food or petting, so it is reinforced
- Hunger — leading you to the bowl
- Boredom plus a crepuscular activity cycle
- Stress or fear, and greeting
- Breed trait — Siamese, Bengals, Sphynx, Tonkinese are more vocal
- Mating — cats in heat caterwaul
The senior red flag
Older cats deserve special attention. PetMD notes feline cognitive dysfunction (dementia) causes disorientation, altered sleep-wake cycles, and night vocalizing — and more than a quarter of cats aged 11–14 show at least one sign, rising to about half of cats over 15. Hyperthyroidism (restless, vocal), hypertension, kidney disease, deafness, and pain are other medical drivers that must be ruled out first.
When to see a vet
A sudden increase in nighttime meowing — especially with changes in appetite, thirst, weight, litter habits, or activity — should be investigated. PetMD stresses ruling out hyperthyroidism, hypertension, kidney disease, arthritis, and cognitive dysfunction before labeling it "just old age."
How to reduce it
The ASPCA's plan targets the behavior after medical causes are cleared:
- Don't reward night meowing — ignore attention-seeking rather than responding.
- Confirm needs — food, water, and a clean litter box are met.
- Schedule feeding with an automatic feeder and play before bed.
- More daytime activity, plus a night light or soft radio for senior confusion, and vet-guided melatonin for irregular sleep.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my cat meow at night for no reason?
Usually it is attention, hunger, or boredom — cats are crepuscular and a quiet house amplifies the behavior. Ignore attention-meowing, meet basic needs, and add a pre-bed play session; an automatic feeder helps if hunger drives it.
My senior cat yowls at night — is that normal?
A new night vocalization in an older cat is often a treatable medical issue — hyperthyroidism, cognitive dysfunction, hypertension, or pain. A vet exam should come before assuming it is just aging.
Will an automatic feeder stop night meowing?
It helps if hunger is the driver, by removing the reward of a pre-dawn feeding. Pair it with pre-bed play and not rewarding attention meows for the best effect.
Why is my cat more vocal at night than during the day?
It is partly their crepuscular nature — most active at dawn and dusk — and partly learned attention-seeking that a quiet night makes obvious. Meeting daytime activity needs reduces the nighttime vocalizing.
