Why is my cat drooling?

Content drool vs. warning drool

A cat drooling on your lap while purring is a known quirk. A cat drooling with bad breath, or drooling in a hot car, is a different story entirely.

The drooling most cat owners learn to live with

Cats aren't famous droolers like dogs, but some drool a little when they're at their most content — purring on your lap, kneading a blanket, half-asleep. PetMD links it to endorphins, and notes it may be a leftover from kittenhood nursing. Most cats who do this start young.

Stress drool looks different: it arrives with vocalizing, flattened ears and escape attempts, and car rides or vet visits are the classic settings (PetMD). Merck lists the same triggers — fear, nervousness, excitement — alongside motion sickness. This drool stops when the trigger does, and a cat in fear-drool mode is otherwise fine.

Drooling that is never normal

Everything else on PetMD's list deserves attention. The three patterns vets see most:

The emergency version

Two situations skip the appointment queue entirely. Heatstroke: a cat left in a hot environment drools and breathes heavily or pants — that's an emergency, straight to the vet (PetMD). Sudden drool plus breathing trouble, collapse or seizures: go now.

Merck adds the full mechanism: drool means either overproduction or inability to swallow, and its cause table reaches well beyond the mouth — kidney failure and liver disease (hepatic encephalopathy) sit right on it. If your cat is drooling and also drinking more, vomiting, or acting off, treat it as illness reporting, not a quirk.

What to do before the appointment

  1. Catch the context. Was she purring on your lap (fine) or pawing at a foul-smelling mouth (not fine)? Note timing and triggers — a medication dose, a car ride, a new plant (PetMD).
  2. Look, don't probe. A quick, gentle look for a stuck object or a bloody streak is enough; a cat in mouth pain may bite.
  3. Keep the face dry. Constant wetness irritates the skin around the lips and chin — Merck recommends gentle drying to prevent that.
  4. Report appetite and energy. Those two, plus breathing, decide how fast this needs to be seen (PetMD).

Frequently asked questions

Do cats drool when they are happy?

Yes — some cats drool a small amount while purring or kneading, possibly linked to endorphins and kitten nursing behavior (PetMD). If it's lifelong, mild and every other sign is normal, it's usually just her thing.

My cat started drooling after I gave medicine. Is that OK?

Very common: liquid medications and bitter pills trigger drooling purely from taste, even when feline-safe (PetMD). Merck lists medication administration as a routine cause. It typically stops once the dose is swallowed — a treat or a bit of water afterward helps.

Why is my cat drooling and pawing at her mouth?

That combination points at oral pain or something stuck in the mouth — dental disease, ulcers, a foreign object (PetMD). Check for bad breath, blood-tinged saliva or food dropping, and get a vet to look; a full exam may need sedation.

When is cat drooling an emergency?

Go immediately if drooling comes with heavy breathing or panting in a hot environment (heatstroke), difficulty breathing, collapse or seizures (PetMD). Call a poison hotline first if you suspect a toxin — PetMD lists the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661.
