How the formula works
The resting energy requirement (RER) is 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75. We then multiply by a life-stage factor: neutered adult ×1.6, intact adult ×1.8, active ×2.0, weight-loss ×1.0, puppy ×2.5. The result is your dog's daily calorie need (DER).
Life-stage multipliers
| Stage | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Neutered adult | ×1.6 |
| Intact adult | ×1.8 |
| Active / working | ×2.0 |
| Weight loss | ×1.0 |
| Puppy (growth) | ×2.5 |
Multipliers follow WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines and AAFCO feeding references. Energy density varies by food — check the bag for kcal per cup. Verified Oct 22, 2026.
